Essential Configuration

When you first login to Etomite, you will be taken to the configuration settings. Review these settings and make necessary changes (like “site name”). Use the “Save” button at the top of the page to save the settings, and your Etomite site is ready to launch. This step is a must. Before you “save” your settings for the first time, the settings are NOT in the database at all and your site will note work! You can then launch your site by choosing the “Launch site” link in the “Site” section of the admin menu (top left of screen in manager). Alternatively, you can just point your browser to the URL for your site.
You can come back to the configuration setting at any later point to make other changes such as how you want your URLs to be handled/rewritten. Test the changes after you make them to ensure that the new behavior or setting acts the way you thought it would.

Other configuration choices

Before you start to build your site there are some decisions that are best made now if possible. Changing these later may mean you need to redo some work, or cause other minor problems.

Rewrite Image paths

Changing this is tricky once you've started to populate your site, as it changes the way paths to images are stored in the database.

Rewriting the paths (to store them relative to the current directory rather than as absolute paths) has the advantage that if you should ever need to move your site to another host (or to a different subdirectory) you will not have to go to the trouble of editting all your image paths throughout the site to the new location.

Despite this, the notes in the Etomite Configuration section say "If you have no idea what this means, it's best just to leave it set to 'No'". I don't know why

Friendly URLs

It is a good idea to decide whether you want to use friendly URLs before you submit to any search engines. Friendly URLs will likely give some advantages in search engine coverage (and possibly ranking) of the pages in your site. It is not essential to make a choice on this early on.

Setting up friendly URLs can be tricky, depending on how your web server is configured, so this is covered in the next section .

Log Visits

This option keeps a log of all visitors to your site (and adds a number of other choices to make if you select it). While its interesting initially to see how busy your site is, it does cause rapid growth of the database, and increase the load on the server (and particularly the database server, as every access will result in multiple writes to the server). It is probably best not selected, especially on busy sites; if you do use it, be prepared to regularly delete the logs, otherwise it will become the main component of the database, and may cause problems when backing up.
